The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Class of 2015 Graduated at Kings Point, N.Y. on Saturday, June 20, 2015 and Maritime TVwas there to webcast it live, thanks to the support of industry sponsors. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administrator, Paul N. ‘Chip’ Jaenichen, Sr., delivered the 79th Commencement address. This year, USMMA awarded degrees to 227 midshipmen.
Graduates represent nearly every state, as well as Malaysia, South Korea and the Republic of Panama. Approximately 2,500 guests attended the event, including family members of the graduating class, and distinguished visitors representing the federal government, flag and general officers from the U.S. Military, senior executives from the maritime industry, community leaders, alumni, faculty and staff.
Paul “Chip” Jaenichen was appointed by President Obama and sworn in as Maritime Administrator on July 25, 2014. Before his appointment, Administrator Jaenichen served as Acting Administrator beginning in June 2013. He joined the U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration in July 2012 when he was appointed Deputy Maritime Administrator.

The Maritime TV Kings Point Acta Non Verba Report is the monthly Internet TV pro-active news program dedicated to featuring the news, headlines and activities surrounding the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy its midshipmen, alumni and the professionals who administrate and support the institution. We cover Kings Point stories that aren’t always told, but should be.
This series originally ran on Maritime TV from 2012-2014 at which time Maritime TV ceased production of the program temporarily to re-focus the program. The series is now being re-launched in June 2015 with special features on a KP midshipman who just placed third runner up in the May 5th Miss Teen Arizona pageant, Joints Chief of Staff Chairman Army Gen. Martin Dempsey speaking at KP, the new academy Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, Nashville’s Alex Michaels Band song tribute to the USMMA featuring one of its midshipman and a new Virginia high-end distillery just opened by two ’82 KP Alumni.

On Monday, March 16, 2015 General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point. General Dempsey was the guest speaker at the 2015 Battle Standard Dinner, an annual event at USMMA and Maritime TV was there to cover it. The dinner, which is hosted by the First Class, honors the memories of the 142 Cadet-Midshipmen who lost their lives during World War II. USMMA is privileged among the nation’s five federal academies to be the only institution authorized to carry a battle standard as part of its Color Guard.

The American Maritime History Project, Inc. just announced the publication of its final historical work, Braving the Wartime Seas and Maritime TV was there to interview Tom McCaffery, author and President of McCaffery & Associates, Inc. Maritime TV was there as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point graduated 225 new Merchant Marine and Military Officers as part of its Class of 2014 commencement ceremony on June 21, 2014. The keynote speaker, Vice Admiral Michelle J. Howard, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy, gave the commencement address before a crowd of more than 2,300 including special guest Deputy Secretary of Transportation Victor M. Mendez, graduates, family members and representatives from the federal government, U.S. military and maritime industry.

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) hosted it’s National Maritime Day “Safety at Sea” EIM Seminar at 2:30 PM on May 22, 2014 from the National Press Club in Washington D.C. Industry and governmental leaders discussed issues of the day surrounding Safety at Sea. This seminar was designed to highlight both best practices and opportunities for improvement and included an address from
Acting Maritime Adminsitrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen.
The Seminar was followed by the National Maritime Day Dinner & AMVER Awards at 6:00 PM, also at the National Press Club. Industry leaders celebrated the achievements of the merchant marine industry with the presentation of the AMVER Awards. This year’s dinner highlighted the developments in the industry, and recognized the shipping companies who participate in the United States Coast Guard’s voluntary AMVER rescue at sea program.

Maritime TV is now featuring free on demand viewing of the full MARAD National Maritime Strategy Symposium from May 6, 2014. This includes presentations from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, Acting Maritime Administrator Paul ‘Chip’ Jaenichen and several congressional representatives. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) invited the public and marine transportation system stakeholders to participate in the agency’s second symposium intended to develop a robust national maritime strategy. The purpose of this second public meeting was to gather ideas to improve the utilization, vitality and competiveness of the nation’s marine transportation system. The principal focus areas included, but were not limited to, U.S. ports, domestic shipping, and U.S. Shipyards. This public meeting took place from 9:00a.m. – 4:30p.m., May 6, 2014.
